ASHBROOK FARMS RABBITRY

Feeding Pinecones to rabbits.
Pinecones are an excellent choice of chew toy for your rabbits, and they are free if you have pine trees in your yard. They can keep your rabbits busy for hours and help prevent them from chewing on cages, mats, water crocks and feeders. Pinecones are also an excellent source of fiber, vitamins and minerals.
*Do not use store bought pine cones unless it is labeled as safe for rabbits. Pinecones in craft stores or grocery stores are typically sealed, painted, or infused with fragrance that can be highly toxic to rabbits.
Benefits of feeding Weeping Willow to rabbits.

WEEPING WILLOW (salix babylonica)
I have yet to find a rabbit that doesn’t love Weeping Willow branches and leaves. I provide my rabbits fresh branches at least once a week through the summer months. You can feed it fresh or dried. When winter is creeping closer I collect as much as I can and twist it into little wreaths and let it dry outside in the sun. You can string them up on a rope or you can put a bunch on a dowel. You want them to dry green. If they are brown they may become less appetizing to your rabbits. Once the wreaths are dry, you can store them in clean trash cans, tubs or feed bags. This will provide Willow to your rabbits through winter if you have a hefty available Willow supply and room to store it.
The benefits of feeding Willow to your rabbits is extensive.
- Willow makes a great healthy chew toy option.
- Recent studies show it may help control coccidiosis.
- Willow contains a natural form of aspirin and that makes it very beneficial for senior rabbits who may be getting a little arthritic or when rabbits are experiencing times of stasis (gastrointestinal upset).
- If your rabbit is already adapted to it and loves it, it can be a great gauge to judge their appetite and energy levels.
- Willow can provide a lot of healthy fats.
- It is a great source of Iron. Iron supports metabolism, energy levels and overall well being.
- Chewing on willow bark or thicker sticks is beneficial to their teeth, oral health, and lowering stress.
- You can’t feed too much as long as they are continuing to eat their hay and drinking water.
